A while ago we were asked by TribVids to do an interview. My responses are a little long winded at times, but I think trib fans will have an idea of where I'm coming from. We talk about the probability of real world sexfights, the type of tribadism TangleCats specializes in, the rarity and attraction of tribadism, and the impact of piracy on small producers.
1. Many of your videos depict sex fights, do you think that sexfighting occurs in the real world or is it more of a fantasy?
Tough question. The fan in me naturally wants to believe that it occurs in the real world, while the realist in me finds it hard to swallow. My sense is that the vast majority of sex fighting occurs primarily for the benefit of a video camera or some other observer. This isn't to say it doesn't happen in the real world, just that the proportion is heavily skewed toward representations of the sexfight fantasy. I'm sure that there are women that enjoy it, or who would like to do it, but it would be a minority of a minority of women that actually carry through and find female partners who enjoy it too. And I'm sure when it does happen it plays out differently than what most videos portray. I know there are some producers that claim to capture "real sexfights." While the competitive and sexual aspects might be very real once the camera rolls, I question whether the sexfighting would even happen if these women weren't asked (or paid) to do it. I guess for most of us this distinction doesn't really matter -- we just want to see women getting physical with each other -- but if we were to classify a sexfight as "real" it has to be initiated by two women themselves (not a producer or husband/boyfriend/girlfriend). Now in most cases this would be some sort of "sex fight date" I suppose, where two women agree to meet up and wrestle sexually. While the encounter would undoubtedly be sexual and competitive, the premeditated quality robs it of certain amount of emotion. It wouldn't be a "fight" per se, just some form of sexual competition. And I said before, probably pretty rare. Now for the "fight" part of "sexfight" to really come alive you need emotion -- anger, really -- anger which transforms itself into sexual passion during the course of real fight. This is the stuff of great fantasies. Fans of the genre I'm sure have entertained hundreds, if not thousands, of these: tussles in the locker room, nude donnybrooks in the dormitory, erotic payback in the prison cell, etc. But I just have trouble seeing that happen in real life. Think of how many times you've been angry enough to hit somebody. Then think how impossible it is for that anger to turn into "hey, motherfucker, I'm gonna give you a big fucken orgasm! You just watch out!" Not going to happen. But having said all this there is an undeniable sexual undercurrent to most woman-on-woman fights, at least in the form of sexual humiliation. How many fights have you seen where the women tear each other's clothes off? I'd venture to say it is far more common than men. Although this is a far cry from the quivering orgasmy heap we'd like to see these encounters progress to, it does add a glimmer of hope to the idea sexfights are possible.
2. Would you say that most of your customers come to see the Tribadism or the fighting/competition in your videos?
Tribadism, definitely. Any fighting or competition in our videos is really a means to an end: a convenient excuse to get intimate. In fact we quickly move beyond any catfight or competition aspects in our videos and dedicate most of the action to tribadism.
3. Do you like Tribadism videos that don't have a competition aspect or do you think that this is a vital part?
Again, tribadism is central for us. Competition is a nice feature once in a while but not a constant in our videos.
4. Do you think consumers of Tribadism overall favour videos with or without the competition aspect?
I do know there are people who absolutely hate the competition aspect. They want something more sensuous. Overall, I'd say the majority could take it or leave it.
5. Why do you think that Tribadism is so rare in mainstream porn? I don't even know where to begin. We launched this site mostly out of frustration with mainstream porn. In fact, anything we've enjoyed has been from small niche producers, or from Japan, but we certainly felt there was room for more. Mainstream US porn can just be awful in terms of lesbian content. I'm a bit mystified by it. With the thousands of titles produced every year, you'd think the sheer number of lesbian scenes that directors have to shoot would inspire something different once in a while. For once I'd like the director to wake up and think "hey, maybe we can fill this 20 minutes with something other than cunnilingus and fingering today." What's really weird is Porn Valley has been fine with experimentation. You have women eating cum omelets or squirting milk out of their ass. I guess experimentation is okay if it involves something edgy or humiliating, but heightening the sensuality or eroticism of a scene doesn't seem to be on the table. As for why it's so rare, I can only guess. I think there is something cultural at work. By that I mean the culture that has formed around mainstream US porn, which has sort of a "me-too" mentality. Of course "tried and true" is a mainstay of any major publishing industry, but when we are dealing with sexuality, there is a lot of room for variety which mainstream porn hasn't capitalized on. If you compare the Japanese porn industry with that of the US you will see what I mean. Within the Japanese porn industry you can go deep into the niches and still find top production quality and major studio participation. Whereas in the Western world, particularly the US, it's left to smaller operations to produce new (and I'd say more erotic) content. Take big butt videos. If you walked into a video store anytime before the early 2000s you had two choices: thin girls with big breasts or elephantine blob-women, with nothing in between. Then some people started to produce big butt movies, and the genre exploded. Now every studio has a big booty series. So obviously the audience was always there, but it took a few enterprising niche producers to pioneer the genre, and then everybody jumped on the bandwagon. So hopefully the efforts of smaller trib producers will eventually have the same knock-on effect. But there is another disturbing trend I've noticed, where successful lesbian genre producers eventually gravitate toward the mean, and begin making stuff that looks like your typical mainstream film. There is one US-based catfight studio who in previous years was, without question, the gold standard for erotic catfights. They've upped their production standards and now have more expensive-looking models, but their shoots are depressingly uninspired and un-erotic. Every time I see a new release and compare it to their previous work I can't help but scream "WTF!?"
6. How would you define Tribadism? (ie. is it purely pussy-pussy, any women-women rubbing, any rubbing between two people)
I suppose purely as pussy-to-pussy. At times we've fudged this a bit. We have a video on our site that contains, as we describe, "reverse missionary tribadism". Unfortunately there is no convenient shorthand to describe "one woman lying on top of the other, grinding her pussy into her butt." Guess we either need to expand the definition of tribadism or just live with being inexact in applying the term.
7. While Tribadism is as popular as many other lesbian positions, there are many that think that its by far the most erotic position. What do you think the attraction is?
Intimacy. Two models can dart their fingers and tongues into vaginal cavities all they want, but there is no denying the intimacy of two vulvas firmly grinding together. This is why TangleCats specializes in missionary tribadism. We are huge fans of maximum body-to-body contact between women, and missionary trib is one of the best ways to achieve that.
8. The term 'Tribadism' is a pretty obscure word and I think that this is one of the reasons that its not a mainstream interest. Do you agree/disagree with this and do you have any suggestions to solve this problem?
The word "Tribadism" is awful. It sounds like a fringe political ideology -- maybe in some respects this isn't too far off! Have you ever noticed that so many words relating to same sex relations between women have this sort of clinical/antiquated tang? "Lesbian." "Saphhic." "Frottage." "Tribadism". I wish there were something cuter or sexier. "Tribbing" will have to do I guess -- at least the double-b's carry the sort of bouncy quality of the activity itself. And it seems any other possible terms are either refer to too specific a position or are somewhat offensive. One I saw in an adult video review years ago -- "grinding gash" -- really stuck with me, but in addition to being somewhat offensive you could only use this term for scissoring. The vagueness of "tribadism" has its own advantages at least. It's inclusive of more positions, and its obscurity makes it easier to find related content in search engines.
9. Illegal pirating, downloading and sharing is becoming a big problem for producers of every type of multimedia including porn. Do you have any comments on this and especially comments on the effects on small business operators such as yourself?
It's particularly a big problem for niche producers. The major studios can push their product through huge, established distribution networks: brick and-mortar adult stores; licensing arrangements through giant portal sites; arrangements with a sprawling network affiliate promoters. Sharing hurts them, no doubt, but they've still attained some profit by the time sharing starts happening. Niche producers, however, don't have the same access to these channels, so we are still in the red once the sharing starts. What's worse is that niche communities become pretty tight-knit, and specialist sharing sites have sprung up. So niche producers, already targeting a small market, face an ever shrinking pool of people willing to financially support the content.
10. If someone was considering downloading one of your movies illegally is there a message that you would like the give them?
I hope that they can keep in mind that tribadism producers are making these videos for one main reason: they like trib and want to support the genre. If we were into adult content to make money we wouldn't do trib. We'd do cum omelets or anal milk projection. So considering the small market we face, it is incredibly important to participate in financially supporting the content you like, especially if you want to see more of it made. A lot of us are using our own sad little savings to run these sites, and we need funds to keep it sustainable.
